I would like to invite you all once again to our annual pilgrimage across Detroit. This year’s walk will take place at 8:00 am sharp on Saturday, the 14th of May. In honor of ISKCON’s 50th anniversary, our temple president, Deva Madhava Prabhu, would like to have at least 50 devotees come on this year’s walk and I would be delighted if I could have the association of that many devotees for this special day of sadhu-sanga.
Last year we had twenty devotees and it was ecstatic. We were quite fortunate to have the blessings of Bhakti Marga Swami, Ashrama Maharaja, and Ekalavya Prabhu on our walk and hopefully they will rejoin us again with new walkers by their side.
I need not remind all of you that Lord Caitanya is patita-pavana, the savior of the fallen. He has thus advented in this age to deliver those who have no hope at all, and if you want to find a place where all hope appears to be lost, I am going to take you to one of the most impoverished neighborhoods in the developed world: Del Rey in the lower southwest region of Detroit. Once a hub of industry, over half of the buildings lie in ruins and those who still live there are afflicted with unemployment and crippling poverty. The least we can do as ambassadors of the most merciful Lord, is to go and give them His holy name. I am thus begging you to please come and help us on this day in our endeavor to spread the sankirtana movement to those who truly need the mercy.
In the mood of beggars, we will leave in the morning with no cellphones, no cameras, no money, and no modern conveniences. For a day we will live as sadhus, simply giving out mercy and begging for whatever sustenance we
need. If you think you are tough enough for this task, then my dear friend, again, I would be honored to have you by my side this year. And when it is all said and done, there will be a cold can of your favorite Faygo (1) drink for you after the walk.
Footnote (1) : Faygo is a wonderful soft drink, or “pop” as we call it, that is produced right here in Detroit. There are many tasty flavors of Fagyo, such as: grape, black cherry, orange, redpop, gold, rock ‘n rye, 60/40, etc.
