In February 2013, during the ISKCON Leadership Sanga in Mayapur, I and a few devotees from Tamil Nadu met with Lokanatha Swami, Padayatra Ministry minister, Istadeva Dasa, ex-Padayatra India leader, and also Bhaktarupa Prabhu. With their blessings we started the work on establishing a padayatra exclusively for Tamil Nadu. Istadeva kindly sent an experienced padayatri, Sri Krishnananda Dasa, to assist and guide the new Padayatra Tamil Nadu team.
On April 3rd, 2014 Jayapataka Swami launched the padayatra, even though there were still a few final touches to be added to the cart and the altar. Our plan is to initially travel in a couple of districts in the central part of Tamil Nadu on a trial walk, and see how it goes before we go on a full-fledged tour of the entire state. After this trial walk with the Deities of Sri Sri Dayala Nitai-Gauracandra, we’ll take a decision based on the manpower and resources available.
The Tamil Nadu Padayatra Office is based at the ISKCON center in Pudukkottai, 50km from Srirangam and Trichy Airport.
